New video of Bruno Fernandes has come out just before Phil Foden’s surprising red card for Man City.
New video has come out showing Bruno Fernandes accidentally elbowing Phil Foden just before the Manchester City midfielder was controversially sent off during the Manchester derby.
City still managed to win 1-0 at Old Trafford even with only 10 players, and Manchester United didn’t really threaten much until the very end.
Erling Haaland scored the winning goal, though there was some debate about an offside decision that let it stand. There was also a lot of talk about Foden’s red card and whether Fernandes’ earlier challenge was actually worse.
Foden was sent off for violent conduct after he kicked out at Fernandes while he was on the ground.
Referee Michael Oliver told the VAR team he gave a red card because Foden kicked Bruno’s body, with VAR official Shaun Donohue saying Foden made a “secondary movement.”
Fernandes wasn’t given a red card, despite kicking Foden in the lower back first, which probably made Foden angry.
A new clip shared on social media seems to show what started the whole thing.
As Foden tries to keep the ball from Fernandes, the United player puts his arm across and accidentally elbows Foden in the back, making him fall down.
It’s not clear if the referee would have thought that was enough to give a free kick or even a yellow card to Fernandes, but it does add another side to why Foden reacted as he did.
Foden will now miss three games because of the red card, which is the usual penalty for violent conduct. If it had been a red for something else, he might have only missed one game.
These suspensions also count for domestic cup games, so Foden will miss City’s Carabao Cup match against Norwich on Thursday – though he might not have played in that game anyway.
Because of the length of the ban, he won’t play any football for about a month, unless he surprisingly gets called up to the England squad. City face Sunderland in the Premier League on Sunday before the international break.
Their next game is away to Liverpool on October 11, so Foden will be back for City’s home Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain on October 14.
After City’s 1-0 win, Foden posted on social media: “Unbelievable performance from the lads. Gutted I didn’t get to play my part properly. Proud to be Blue.”
