Next England manager odds: A clear favourite has emerged to take over from Thomas Tuchel
The favourite to become the next England manager has come into focus after the FA shared an update on Thomas Tuchel’s future.
When Anthony Gordon scored to put England 1-0 ahead at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday (July 15), fans started to believe the Three Lions might finally reach a World Cup final after 60 years.
But Argentina and Lionel Messi, who set up two goals, had other ideas. Late goals from Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez helped Argentina come back and move on to the final against Spain on Sunday (July 19) at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey.
England will play in the bronze medal match against France on Saturday (July 18) at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium.
After England’s loss, Tuchel’s job came under the spotlight. Some fans think he should be replaced, blaming his defensive tactics for letting Argentina back into the game as England sat deep after taking the lead.
On social media, one fan wrote: “Even without a coach badge, I know not to defend for 30 mins at the end of the game, lmao. England hired a joke; now I see why he was sacked by Chelsea.”
Another said: “He was brought in to finish the job but hasn’t done better than Southgate. Strange choices with the squad and substitutions. We’ve only looked good for about 65 minutes this tournament. SACK HIM.”
A third fan offered a different view: “It’s a shame and Tuchel made mistakes, but calls for him to be sacked are silly. This was the best England World Cup I’ve seen, many players will be there next time, and English football is in a good place.”
Tuchel’s substitutions also got criticism, such as bringing on Ezri Konsa for Gordon, Dan Burn for Reece James, and Nico O’Reilly for Declan Rice.
Former England goalkeeper Joe Hart, working with the BBC, said Tuchel “didn’t believe” the team could score again after going ahead, which made them defend deep.
Hart said: “We’ve seen criticism of Southgate for how England played when leading, and nothing has really changed. Tuchel’s quick changes showed he didn’t believe his team could do more against Argentina.”
Though the FA has publicly supported Tuchel after the loss, bookmakers Sky Bet see Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe as the favourite to take over if Tuchel leaves.
Howe is at 5/2 and has been linked with the England job before, praised for his work at Bournemouth and Newcastle, leading the Magpies to the Champions League twice and winning the Carabao Cup.
Former Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is second favourite at 10/3, and USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino is at 7/1.
