One crazy Deadline Day mix-up ended up making THREE deals fall through and has put one club in big financial trouble.
After an already wild summer of transfer news in the Premier League, Deadline Day didn’t let us down, with clubs scrambling to finish last-minute moves before the window closed.
Spurs and Chelsea were among the busiest teams in the final hours, while Liverpool and Man United tried but couldn’t land any senior signings at the last minute.
The biggest move of the day was made by Manchester City, who completed a record-tying £125 million deal for former Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez just before the deadline.
But the most dramatic transfer story wasn’t about Fernandez—it was one saga that caused three deals to collapse.
On the last day, Everton wanted to boost their attack after selling star Iliman Ndiaye to Man City for £65 million and striker Beto to Fiorentina for £14.58 million.
They also brought back England’s Jack Grealish on loan and tried a surprise move for US striker Folarin Balogun.
Balogun’s move to Everton looked all set after he arrived for a medical ahead of a £40 million switch from AS Monaco.
Then suddenly, the deal was called off due to a medical issue. That forced Monaco to quickly sell midfielder Lamine Camara to raise the money they needed.
Chelsea and Liverpool had been linked to Camara, but on Deadline Day, Chelsea made a formal £47 million offer for the 22-year-old, with a six-year contract ready to go pending the medical.
Everything seemed fine—until just minutes after the 11 pm deadline, Monaco pulled out of the deal.
It turned out Monaco had renegotiated Balogun’s sale to Everton and decided they preferred selling Balogun over Camara.
Chelsea, who had a written agreement with Monaco, were reportedly furious. Sky Sports said the club called Monaco’s behavior “extraordinary and deeply unprofessional.”
Then the biggest surprise: Balogun himself chose to pull out of the Everton move at the last second.
With the window closed, Everton, Chelsea, and most of all Monaco had to stay just as things were at the start of the day.
While Everton and Chelsea fans will be disappointed not to get those players, Monaco’s problems are much worse.
According to Ben Jacobs, Monaco now faces serious money troubles because they failed to sell either Balogun or Camara before the deadline.
They might have to look for deals in other leagues like Saudi Arabia or Turkey, where the transfer windows are still open.
This could mean letting one of their top players go cheaply just to balance the books late in the summer.
