Piers Morgan shares a surprising opinion on the Cristiano Ronaldo-Jorge Jesus disagreement, calling it a ‘proud’ moment during a passionate chat with Simon Jordan.
British journalist Piers Morgan shared an interesting view on the recent disagreement between Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal’s head coach Jorge Jesus during a chat with Simon Jordan. This all started after Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp last week following a row with Jesus.
Ronaldo played in Portugal’s 1-0 win over Wales but was benched and didn’t play in the 2-1 win against Norway in Oslo. He later announced on social media that he had left the camp before the team’s trip to Denmark on October 1.
A week later, Ronaldo made a strong statement saying that Jesus broke promises made before the Norway match and clarified that he isn’t retiring from international football.
This sparked a lot of reactions in the football world. On October 7, talkSPORT host and former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan debated the issue with Morgan. Jordan asked if some of Ronaldo’s behavior could be behind the conflicts, suggesting maybe Morgan was too quick to defend him.
Morgan quickly stood up for Ronaldo, saying he was proud of his friend for standing up for himself. He explained that Ronaldo values respect and honesty above everything else—not money, fame, or ego. Morgan liked how Ronaldo clearly explained what happened in his statement.
Coach Jorge Jesus also spoke briefly to the press, saying he’s focused on the team and the national side.
Ronaldo, 41, has scored 146 goals in 234 games for Portugal. It’s still unclear if he’ll be called up again for the November Nations League matches.
In a long message, Ronaldo explained the full story himself. He said he was happy when Jesus was chosen as coach and that initially, they agreed on a plan for his participation. Ronaldo was supposed to play the first and last matches but was told he might skip some away games. He refused to stay behind on those trips because as captain, he wanted to set a good example.
They had calm talks, and Ronaldo played in the match at home, proudly passing the captain’s armband to Bruno Fernandes. But before the Norway match, Ronaldo was surprised when Jesus asked if he could play 30 minutes, even though that wasn’t part of the plan. Ronaldo agreed, but he ended up warming up on the sideline and didn’t get onto the pitch. Ronaldo felt the coach broke his word.
After the match, he apologized to fans for not greeting them, explaining he was frustrated. Ronaldo also described a follow-up meeting where they agreed Jesus would clear things up in a press conference, but the coach’s attitude there felt aggressive and didn’t match their private talks.
Feeling that trust was broken again, Ronaldo decided to leave the training camp. He emphasized how important honesty and truth are to him, and said if the federation and coach didn’t want him, they should be honest with him.
He apologized to his teammates for leaving but said he felt staying would only harm the team. Ronaldo acknowledged that, as captain, his actions might bring serious consequences. He said he accepts that and believes all players, no matter their status, should follow the rules.
Ronaldo also addressed talk about a farewell match. He promised his fans and the Portuguese people that there will be one or more farewell games in the future.
But for now, he’s focused on competing and doing his best for Portugal. He shared a touching moment about how, even after learning of his father’s death, he stayed with the national team to play the next match out of love for his country.
Ronaldo made it clear that as long as he’s fit, playing well for his club, and after any suspension, he’ll be ready to play and help Portugal win.
He ended by saying this is the purest truth from his heart.
