Premier League fans have shared their thoughts on Anthony Gordon’s recent remarks about how supporters in England saw him.
In one of the biggest surprises of the summer transfer window, England international Gordon left Newcastle United to join the famous Barcelona team in a deal worth £69.3 million, including add-ons. Since moving, the winger has enjoyed a bit of a fresh start and become a fan favorite in Spain. Gordon explained why he thinks Spanish fans appreciate him more than English fans did.
Since joining Barcelona, Gordon has played seven games in all competitions and had a great start with four assists in his first four matches. While he hasn’t scored his first goal yet and his form has dipped a bit recently, coach Hansi Flick still regularly picks him, and fans seem happy with his progress.
Gordon told ITV during England’s Nations League games that Barcelona fans notice more of what he can do compared to his time in England. “I think people see me differently now,” he said. “In England, people respected my speed and work rate, but didn’t really see the quality and smartness in my game. Only my teammates noticed that. Here at Barça, I play a different style, and those skills stand out more. People realize I’m more than just quick.”
He added, “In England, I was seen as just fast and aggressive. In Spain, they value my game IQ and skills because here, if you’re not technical and smart, you don’t fit in.”
Gordon made 152 appearances for Newcastle and 78 for Everton before that.
Unsurprisingly, English fans quickly responded to his comments, with some criticizing him for overrating himself. One fan wrote on X, “What football IQ? He’s just a kick and run winger who needs lots of space.” Another said, “He’s fast and direct, that’s his game. Not knocking it, but he’s no midfield genius.”
One Newcastle supporter added, “Did he forget he went over a year without scoring from open play in the league?”
However, not all English fans disagreed. Some said he’s still underrated in the Premier League. A Newcastle fan commented, “People tease him, but I like him and his confidence. Last season was rough for us all, but he’s a top player and more interesting than most footballers.” Another said, “He’s improving, but he’s basically the same player we knew. His big problem was being inconsistent.”
One fan put it simply: “People didn’t rate him in England because he played for Newcastle, not a top club. Now at Barça, casual fans act like he’s world class just because of the name on his shirt.”
Despite the mixed reactions, Gordon has impressed England fans while on international duty, starting in both the 3-2 loss to Spain and the match against Czechia.
