PSG starts talks with surprise Premier League star playing in the World Cup
Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly starting talks to sign a surprising Premier League player. With the World Cup now at the semi-final stage, many players are heading back to their clubs to get ready for the 2026/27 season.
Transfer activity is picking up already. On Monday (July 13), Manchester United announced they’ve signed Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £48 million. They’re also in advanced talks to sign Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans. Villa want him to stay, but if United meets his £35 million release clause, they may have to let him go.
Tielemans might not be the only one leaving Villa Park soon. European champions PSG are reportedly close to signing Aston Villa’s left-back Lucas Digne, who is currently with France’s World Cup team. According to The Athletic, his contract has a release clause under £10 million, and he still has two years left on his deal.
Although Digne is Unai Emery’s first-choice left-back, Villa see Ian Maatsen as the long-term replacement. Plus, PSG are also talking to AC Milan’s Pervis Estupiñán, who used to play for Brighton, to add competition for the spot.
Digne joined Villa from Everton in January 2022 and has made 182 appearances so far. Before that, he played for Barcelona, Roma, Lille, and even PSG between 2013 and 2016, winning two Ligue 1 titles with the Paris club. He has 62 caps for France and has played four times in this World Cup run.
While it looks like Digne could return to PSG, he once said in a 2020 interview that leaving Paris was the right choice for him. “Maybe sometimes I was impatient,” he said. “Maybe I should have taken my time. Maybe at Paris, I should have been a bit more patient before leaving. But it was a career choice. I needed to play more and to play every match. I needed that, and when I look back now, I’m proud of my career.”
