Raheem Sterling speaks out with a surprising post after admitting to dangerous driving and having drugs.
Raheem Sterling has shared his first message since pleading guilty after his car crash in May.
On Tuesday, the former England star appeared at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court, facing charges of dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide (laughing gas), and failing to provide a specimen.
The 31-year-old admitted to dangerous driving and drug possession after crashing his Lamborghini Urus on May 28. This is the first time he’s spoken out since the court hearing.
After his arrest, Sterling told police he had a problem with nitrous oxide. Bodycam footage showed him trying to move the gas canisters and a deflated balloon in his car.
This happened just weeks after Sterling returned to England following a short stint with Dutch club Feyenoord, where he made only eight appearances.
At the hearing, Sterling took full responsibility. The court heard he was so affected by the laughing gas that he couldn’t complete simple tests like touching his nose or walking straight.
He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide, and failing to provide a specimen after the crash early on May 28.
Since then, Sterling has posted on Instagram promising to improve, with the caption: “Progress Over Perfection.” He shared photos and videos of business meetings, indoor football, and workouts. One image showed graffiti saying, “The goal is simple. Be better than yesterday.”
Until now, he hadn’t spoken publicly about the case, and a full statement is still expected.
Because of his plea, Sterling could face up to two years in prison, which might end his football career. He also risks an unlimited fine and a driving ban of at least 12 months, plus an extended retest.
The crash damaged a metal gate and a roadside sign, making this a serious case with a starting sentence of 18 months custody. However, since two years is the maximum in UK law, he might avoid prison.
Factors like his early guilty plea, no injuries to others, good past character, and willingness to get help for nitrous oxide misuse could work in his favor. This means he might get a shorter or suspended sentence.
We should find out his punishment on November 25, when the magistrates will decide whether to sentence him or send the case to the Crown Court.
