Ralf Rangnick’s only Man Utd signing has been told he can leave the club permanently this summer.
A bunch of academy graduates might be leaving Manchester United this summer, including the only player signed during Ralf Rangnick’s time as interim manager at Old Trafford.
Rangnick was in charge for six months between November 2021 and May 2022, leading the team through 29 games with 11 wins, 10 draws, and eight losses after taking over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
His time at United was definitely memorable. Unlike many coaches, he was open about which players he thought United should sign.
According to BILD, Rangnick suggested nine players he believed would help the team compete, like Alvaro Morata, Luis Diaz, Dusan Vlahovic, Josko Gvardiol, Christopher Nkunku, Erling Haaland, Enzo Fernandez, Julian Alvarez, and Konrad Laimer. He was also keen on signing Monaco’s midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, but the club didn’t go after any of these players.
The only signing made under Rangnick was Toby Collyer, a talented defensive midfielder who joined from Brighton in March 2022, just after the January transfer window had closed. Collyer, who was 18 then, was initially brought in for the under-21 team. He’s since played 13 first-team games, with his last appearance in March last year as a substitute in a 3-0 win over Leicester City.
Now, it looks like his four-year time at United might be ending, as The Sun reports he’s free to leave the club permanently this summer. Several Championship clubs are interested in him. Just recently, he played in an under-21 match against Altrincham after being left out of the squad versus Atletico Madrid. The 22-year-old has also had loan spells at West Brom and Hull City.
Besides Collyer, other academy graduates like Dan Gore, Chido Obi, and Jacob Devaney could also be on their way out of Old Trafford this summer. Gore, who spent last season on loan at Rotherham in League One, is expected to leave permanently, while Obi and Devaney are likely to go out on loan.
Meanwhile, Everton are interested in 20-year-old striker Ethan Wheatley. Fabrizio Romano reports that the Toffees are getting ready to make an official offer for him.
