Real Madrid star promises Jose Mourinho after being caught drunk driving
Raul Asencio is determined to get back to his best at Real Madrid after making some serious mistakes that put his career at risk.
In June, Real Madrid surprised everyone by bringing Jose Mourinho back as head coach, signing him for three years. Since then, Mourinho has faced a lot of challenges, including the drama around star player Vinicius Junior, who was linked with a move to Arsenal before signing a new contract this summer.
But the biggest problem for Mourinho has been defender Asencio, who got involved in a major drink-driving incident. The 23-year-old was stopped at a breathalyser test in southern Gran Canaria while driving a Porsche Macan GTS early on August 16. He was found to be over the legal alcohol limit.
According to Spanish news Atlantico Hoy, Asencio’s breath tests showed 0.90 and 0.88 milligrams of alcohol per litre of air, which is more than three times the legal limit of 0.25 mg/l in Spain.
Shortly after, Asencio faced a fast-track trial, where he was fined €14,400 (£12,480), paying €120 per day over four months. He was also banned from driving for eight months.
This trial happened just a day before Asencio was set to appear in court for another case involving him sharing a private, explicit video allegedly recorded by some of his former Real Madrid youth teammates in 2023. He reportedly showed the videos to someone else on his phone but has since apologized privately to the women involved, who have forgiven him and accepted compensation.
According to Defensa Central, Asencio knows he’s made mistakes but is ready to move on and focus fully on his football career with Real Madrid and Mourinho.
Before he can do that, the club is taking disciplinary action against him because of the drink-driving case. Depending on how serious they see it, Asencio could face a fine or other punishments before he can fully return to the team.
It looks like winning back the club’s trust will be tough. Reports say Real Madrid even thought about selling him this summer, but an injury stopped that from happening.
In response, Asencio reportedly met with Mourinho personally and promised to focus completely on his career, improve his football, and leave the past behind for good.
