Roy Keane has encouraged Harry Kane to stick to what he does best if England want to win the World Cup this summer.

England started their World Cup warm-up in North America with a quiet 1-0 win over New Zealand, with Kane scoring the only goal. Kane comes into the tournament after a fantastic season at Bayern Munich, scoring 61 goals in all competitions, including 36 in the Bundesliga.

Many people think England’s success depends a lot on Kane, and Keane agrees. But he also thinks Kane might need to change his style a bit because of the hot weather expected during the tournament. Matches are likely to be played in very warm conditions, and Keane worries that Kane dropping back to help build play could tire him out.

After the New Zealand game, Keane said Kane should focus on being the team’s main goal scorer, leaving the playmaking to others. He told ITV, “He has to use his experience now, especially after playing big Champions League games with Bayern. Be smart with your position. Even with the goal he scored, New Zealand had many players back, but Kane just found space. He should keep that experience in mind.”

He added, “There’s no need for him to drop back past the halfway line to make passes because there are plenty of players who can do that. Kane is the best striker right now, and if England want to win the big trophy, he has to be their key man.”

Experts say at least one-third of the World Cup games will be played when it’s hotter than 26°C. England are preparing for this with special cooling devices and other tactics. Still, Kane doesn’t think the heat will be a big problem. He said, “The drinks breaks help a lot. People talk about the heat, but I don’t think it will be as tough as some say. A few of us who have trained in the heat felt fine today. We’re all professionals and have played in warm weather before.”

England will start their World Cup journey against Croatia on June 17.
