Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are ready to break a huge Tiger Woods record that’s been standing for years.
Tiger Woods is often called the greatest golfer ever, and it’s easy to see why with all his amazing records.
At 50 years old, he’s won 82 official PGA Tour events, tying with Sam Snead for the most wins ever.
He’s also won 15 major championships, the second most in history—only Jack Nicklaus, with 18, has more.
On top of that, Woods has earned the most money in PGA Tour history, but that might change this weekend at the Tour Championship.
Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy both have a chance to beat Woods’ total career earnings of about $121 million from his 82 wins.
Scheffler has been outstanding over the past five years and is close to breaking the record.
He’s the world No. 1 and won the Masters in 2022 and 2024, as well as the PGA Championship and Open Championship in 2025, earning big prize money.
Right now, Scheffler has earned about $120.4 million with just 21 wins, while McIlroy has made around $117.8 million.
Scheffler needs to finish 13th or better this weekend to surpass Woods since 13th place pays $625,000.
McIlroy’s challenge is tougher because he must finish at least fourth to beat the record, which would earn about $3.2 million.
He could also hit that same amount by tying for third or second place with others.
The Tour Championship started Thursday at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, with a $40 million prize pool and $10 million for the winner.
Both players know they could make history here by beating Woods’ record.
It’s worth remembering that prize money was much smaller when Woods was winning most of his tournaments.
Scheffler pointed this out in an interview, saying, “It’s like comparing apples and oranges.”
He added, “A big reason prize money is so high today is because of Tiger and the huge impact he’s had on golf.”
