Scottie Scheffler’s amazing 1,428-day streak came to an end after just one missed birdie.
Open champion Scottie Scheffler couldn’t keep his score under par on the last hole at the Scottish Open, ending a long and impressive streak. On Friday, Scheffler missed a birdie on the 18th hole at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick, finishing his second round two over par, after starting with a round of two under.
The American player finished the hole in four but had four bogeys during the round, three of them on the back nine, after beginning with a birdie. Because of this, the world number one missed the cut for the first time since 2022, ending an incredible run of 1,428 days. Overall, Scheffler had made the cut in 78 straight events before falling short in Scotland.
The timing was tough, as Scheffler will be defending his title at The Open from June 16 to 19, his last chance to win a major this season. After his round, Scheffler told the DP World Tour, “I got off to a tough start and on the back nine, I didn’t feel like I was close enough to the pins to give myself many good chances. That’s really what it came down to.”
He added, “I tried to get some good looks. I felt like I hit the ball better on the back nine, but overall it wasn’t quite enough. I was just hitting it too far from the hole and wasn’t making the putts.”
Even though he missed the cut, the 30-year-old stayed calm and is still the favorite with the bookmakers to win The Open at Royal Birkdale. This year, different players have won each major: Rory McIlroy kept the Masters title, Aaron Rai won his first major at the PGA Championship, and Wyndham Clark took home the US Open for the second time in four years.
BBC Sport reported that Scheffler was at level par halfway through the Scottish Open, while the cut was expected to be two under. “He missed making the weekend at a PGA Tour event for the first time since the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship. The next longest active streak of consecutive cuts is Matt Fitzpatrick’s 28,” they said.
Besides Scheffler and McIlroy, other top contenders for The Open include Tommy Fleetwood, who’s chasing his first major, LIV Golf star Jon Rahm, and Xander Schauffele, who won The Open and the PGA Championship in 2024 and is expected to be a strong challenger next weekend.
Scheffler has won four majors in total, including the PGA Championship and The Open in 2025, plus he’s a two-time Masters winner.
