Serena Williams’ tennis future after her Wimbledon knee injury is now clear
A close source has shared some news about Serena Williams’ comeback after a knee injury forced her to leave Wimbledon early. Serena, who holds 23 Grand Slam titles and is the greatest women’s player ever, made a surprise return to tennis after being away for 1,375 days.
Her last match was in the 2022 US Open third round against Ajla Tomljanovic, and she also played Wimbledon that year. In June, she came back at the Queen’s Club event, teaming up with Victoria Mboko and winning their first match. Sadly, Victoria had to pull out due to a knee injury.
Serena got a wildcard to play at Wimbledon too, a tournament she has won seven times. She returned to singles after a long break but lost a tough three-set match to Australia’s Maya Joint (3-6, 7-6, 6-3). She was also planned to play doubles with her sister Venus, but her knee injury stopped her from competing. Serena said, “unfortunately my knee just isn’t ready to compete.”
The good news is her break won’t be too long. Serena is expected to return to the WTA Tour and play in big Grand Slam events soon. Tennis expert Jon Wertheim from The Tennis Channel says she already has two summer tournaments lined up, and there’s even a chance she could team up with Carlos Alcaraz, which would be exciting.
Jon shared, “The knee injury that cut short Serena’s Wimbledon return seems to be healed. We’re hearing she’ll be back on hard courts this summer.” He added, “Venus is likely to play in Toronto again, where she got a wild card as a teen. Serena is expected there too, maybe playing singles and doubles. The Williams sisters might also play Cincinnati and are expected at the 2026 US Open, starting with mixed doubles.”
Serena last played at the Canadian Open in 2022, losing in the second round. She has won that tournament twice before, and with it starting August 1, it could be great practice for the US Open later that month.
About the US Open, Jon said, “Keep an eye on Serena and Carlos Alcaraz possibly teaming up, especially if Carlos’ wrist heals.” Carlos has been out for about three months after a wrist injury in April at the Barcelona Open. He had to withdraw despite winning his first match and missed both the French Open and Wimbledon. But he’s back training and looks set to return by the US Open.
Carlos will aim to defend his title from last year, and teaming up with Serena would be amazing. After posting training photos from Madrid, Serena hinted about partnering with Carlos by commenting, “They not ready.” Fans are excited to see what’s next for these two stars!
