South African player Jayden Adams passes away just weeks after competing in the World Cup
South African midfielder Jayden Adams has sadly passed away at just 25 years old, only a few weeks after playing for his country at the World Cup. The football community was heartbroken when eNCA shared the news, though the cause of his death is still unknown.
South African police said they are looking into the matter after finding the body of a 25-year-old man at a home in Schotschekloof, a neighborhood in central Cape Town, on Saturday morning.
Jayden played for Mamelodi Sundowns at club level and appeared three times for South Africa at the World Cup, where they were knocked out by Canada in the round of 32.
Many heartfelt messages have come in from around the football world. The South African Football Players Union said: “We are truly devastated by the sudden loss of our teammate and friend, Jayden Adams. He recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with so much pride and courage. His passing is a huge loss for his family, teammates, clubs, and all of South African football. We send our deepest condolences to his loved ones. Jayden was a very talented player and an amazing young person with so much more to give. May he rest in peace.”
They also shared on their X account, “Death has taken one of us far too soon. Our nation lost a remarkable footballer, but Jayden Adams’ legacy and spirit will live on. We will always remember his kindness, talent, and the pride he showed for South Africa. Rest in peace, Jayden. You will never be forgotten.”
Jayden moved last summer from his boyhood club Stellenbosch to Mamelodi Sundowns in Pretoria. After making his debut for South Africa in 2024, he quickly became a key player for the team, making a strong impact both on and off the field. He earned his spot at the World Cup after shining in the Betway Premiership, contributing to three goals in 37 games across all competitions.
Before South Africa’s World Cup opener against co-host Mexico, his partner Aqueelah Adendorf shared a loving message: “Good luck at the World Cup, my love. I’m so proud of everything you’ve worked for. Enjoy every moment and show the world what you can do. No matter what, I’ll always be your biggest fan.
