Spurs are ‘thinking about’ letting go of Roberto de Zerbi, and a top choice for his replacement is already coming up.
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly thinking about finding a new manager after Roberto de Zerbi’s tough start to the season.
Last season was a close call for Spurs, as they barely avoided relegation from the Premier League. This summer, they spent around £380 million on ten new players, hoping to turn things around. But fans have been disappointed to see the team struggling even more, leading to talk that De Zerbi might be replaced just five games into the new season.
After a month, Spurs haven’t won a Premier League game yet. They have just two points from two 0-0 draws and are heading into a three-week international break. On top of that, they’ve already been knocked out of the Carabao Cup after losing 3-1 to Liverpool in the third round.
Spanish news site Fichajes says Spurs are already looking for a new manager in case they decide to let De Zerbi go. This comes after a 2-3 loss to Aston Villa, which put Spurs in the relegation zone and put De Zerbi’s job in jeopardy.
One thing making a change harder is that De Zerbi’s contract runs until 2031 without a break clause, even if Spurs get relegated. That means the club would have to pay over £10 million if they fire him early. They might lower that cost if both sides agree to part ways, but right now, that seems unlikely.
For now, reports say Spurs won’t fire De Zerbi during the international break. Instead, they’ll use this time to think about other managers and decide if staying with him or letting him go makes more sense.
If Spurs look for a new manager, fans might expect former boss Mauricio Pochettino to be linked with a return. However, since he’s currently coaching the US men’s national team, another former Premier League manager, Eddie Howe, is seen as the top candidate.
Howe left Newcastle United just before the season started, where he had a successful run, leading them to the Champions League twice and winning the Carabao Cup. Because of this, many clubs, including Spurs, might consider him if the job opens up. Whether Howe would want to take the Spurs job is still unknown.
