Spurs make an exciting double deal with Premier League rivals after Cody Gakpo choice
Tottenham Hotspur have agreed to sign two new players after missing out on Premier League forward Cody Gakpo, who decided to join Manchester City instead. Spurs had been keen on signing Gakpo throughout the summer as their manager, Roberto De Zerbi, looked to strengthen the squad.
Gakpo, a Dutch international, played in Liverpool’s recent 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest, but it soon became clear that might have been his last game for the club. David Ornstein from The Athletic reported that Gakpo chose to move permanently to City, and all sides are now talking to finalize the deal.
This was a tough blow for Spurs, who also suffered a 2-0 home defeat to Newcastle, marking their second Premier League loss in a row without scoring. But there’s good news for Spurs fans: they’re bringing in a new attacker.
Ornstein also shared that Spurs have agreed to sign Everton winger Iliman Ndiaye. At the same time, forward Richarlison is expected to return to Everton, making this a sort of two-way move, though officially the deals are separate.
Richarlison was much loved at Everton, scoring 10 goals in the 2021/22 season and helping the team avoid relegation despite playing with injuries. He has faced several injury problems in recent years but still managed 11 Premier League goals for Spurs last season, helping them stay up.
With new signings like Omar Marmoush and Savinho arriving from Manchester City, Richarlison now seems surplus to Spurs’ needs and is likely to leave before the transfer window closes.
In other Everton news, it looked like young midfielder Harrison Armstrong was set to move to Nottingham Forest for £35 million. Fans were unhappy about this, even chanting for him to stay during a 1-1 draw against Bournemouth. Armstrong, just 19, has started every game for Everton this season and is seen as a promising England talent.
However, on Sunday, Everton decided to keep Armstrong after all, with club chairman Dan Friedkin reportedly involved in the decision. The strong reaction from fans was an important factor in Everton’s change of heart.
