The Chicago White Sox Struggling Continues with 11th Consecutive Loss

The Chicago White Sox continued their disappointing season with an 11-game skid extending to a 13-3 loss against the Baltimore Orioles. This loss marked their 20th consecutive defeat in games where Chris Flexen started, breaking a major league record previously held by Chris Capuano of the Milwaukee Brewers. As a result of an 0-10 homestand, the White Sox dropped to a dismal 31-108 record, putting them on their third-longest losing streak of the season.

If the White Sox maintain their current pace, they are on track to finish with a record of 36-126, which would be the second-most defeats in a single season since the 1899 Cleveland Spiders. The post-1900 loss record of 40-120 set by the 1962 New York Mets could also be in jeopardy if the White Sox do not turn their season around. With a 4-41 record in their last 45 games, the White Sox’s performance ranks as one of the worst over a 45-game span since 1916.

Chris Flexen, who fell to 2-14 with the loss, has not recorded a win since May 8th against the Tampa Bay Rays. He is currently 0-11 in his last 21 appearances, holding a 5.73 ERA. Flexen expressed his disappointment in his performances, acknowledging that while there have been a few quality starts, overall, his outings have been subpar. This struggle mirrors that of Chris Capuano, who went 0-13 with a 6.12 ERA during a similar stretch of futility for the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Baltimore Orioles capitalized on the White Sox’s woes, with Cedric Mullins leading the offensive charge with three RBIs, while Austin Slater and Gunnar Henderson each drove in three runs. The Orioles, now 5-0 against the White Sox this season, continued their dominance with an 18-hit performance. Henderson’s home run in the first inning tied him with franchise legends Cal Ripken Jr. and Miguel Tejada for the most home runs by a Baltimore shortstop.

Baltimore’s offense shined in this matchup, going 7-for-23 with runners in scoring position and scoring their most runs since June 20th. The Orioles’ 18 hits were their highest since they faced the Houston Astros on June 21st. Austin Slater commented on the team’s offensive outburst, expressing his belief in the team’s potential and enjoyment in seeing their capabilities on full display.

The Chicago White Sox find themselves in the midst of a historically bad season, with their recent loss to the Baltimore Orioles marking their 11th consecutive defeat. The Orioles, on the other hand, showcased their offensive prowess, dominating the White Sox to secure another victory. As the season progresses, both teams will continue to strive for improvement and success in the face of adversity.
