The latest news about Man Utd’s midfield recruitment plan hasn’t been popular with the fans.
A new report says it’s no longer a sure thing that Manchester United will sign another midfielder this summer. They might decide to focus on other positions instead.
Recently, United have been keen to bring in central midfielders, signing Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and Andrey Santos from Chelsea. They paid £35 million to activate Tielemans’ release clause and spent £48 million plus an extra £2 million in add-ons for Santos.
Earlier, United had agreed to sign Atalanta’s Ederson in June but pulled out after his medical. Instead, they chose Santos, who is also from Brazil.
People expected a third midfielder to join before a busy season, especially with Champions League football back. However, The Athletic reports that it’s now unclear if another midfielder will arrive. The club is thinking about where to spend money next, including considering Newcastle’s Lewis Hall.
Mason Mount, who has had some injury problems since joining from Chelsea, has done well playing deeper in pre-season. Still, his fitness is a worry. Kobbie Mainoo will join Tielemans and Santos in midfield, but some fans are worried the squad won’t be strong enough for so many games.
One fan said, “The club isn’t serious if they think they can rely only on the current midfielders.” Another added, “We don’t have a natural defensive midfielder, and what if Mount gets injured again? This isn’t what INEOS promised.”
A third fan called it “madness” to depend on an injury-prone player instead of signing more help, especially with several competitions coming up. Yet another wrote, “I’m torn. When Mount is fit, he’s a top player and was the best against Brighton last season. But you just can’t count on him.”
As mentioned, full-back Lewis Hall is still linked with a move to United, but The Athletic says the deal is very complicated.
