Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson shared that he didn’t include Finn Aziz in the second game against Israel because he didn’t think Aziz was ready to play. The two teams met again just a week after their first match and ended with a 1-1 draw in Backa Topola. Troy Parrott kept up his great goal-scoring streak.

Before the game, the Irish players once again didn’t shake hands with the Israel team and bowed their heads during Israel’s national anthem. The match was tense and heated, with reports that an Israeli player spat at someone on the Ireland staff during halftime. Hallgrimsson didn’t want to comment on that but confirmed his choice to rest Aziz.

Aziz is a full Irish international and started in the 2-2 draw with Austria a few days earlier. He has Israeli heritage through his mother, and even said his grandmother was a general in the Israeli army. After Ireland’s goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu chose to skip the first game, Hallgrimsson said he felt Aziz wasn’t mentally ready to play in the second match. “I didn’t feel he was ready,” he said. “It’s probably the hardest situation for him of all of us.”

There’s talk from the FAI that Aziz might end his international career soon. He was on the bench but didn’t play in the first match against Israel. That first game was also marked by a racism claim, with midfielder Jayson Molumby reportedly hearing chants aimed at Adam Idah. However, since the proper protocol wasn’t followed, UEFA couldn’t investigate.

The press conference before the second game was also controversial. It was stopped suddenly after an Israeli journalist accused the Irish players of racial insults toward Israeli players. The FAI immediately called the claim “completely untrue” and ended the conference. No UEFA officials were there, as they wanted to avoid any trouble.

After the match, UEFA banned two Israeli journalists from the post-game press conference, confirming the suspension, according to Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph.
