Tottenham encouraged to sign a top striker with 72 goals who called out Arsenal’s actions as ‘cringeworthy’
Tottenham have been encouraged to sign a proven goal scorer who could help make them real title contenders this season.
Spurs have already been busy this summer, spending over £200 million on players like Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, and Jan Paul van Hecke. They’ve also picked up Marcos Senesi, Andrew Robertson, and backup goalkeeper Martin Dubravka on free transfers.
There are talks about Lucas Bergvall and club captain Cristian Romero possibly leaving, with Inter and Atletico Madrid showing interest in Romero. Meanwhile, Spurs are said to be interested in Liverpool’s winger Cody Gakpo, as well as Benfica and Norway’s Andreas Schjelderup. Manchester City’s Savinho and Chelsea’s Pedro Neto are also on their radar, though Roberto De Zerbi seems to prefer the Brazilian.
Now, former Chelsea, West Ham, and Celtic striker Carlton Cole has suggested on talkSPORT (August 6) that Spurs should sign a proven goal scorer from the Saudi Pro League – England international Ivan Toney, who currently plays for Al Ahli.
Cole said, “They need a striker who scores 20 goals a season. There aren’t many like that. I think they should try to get Ivan Toney or even bring Harry Kane back. That would make a huge difference.”
He also mentioned that current forwards Richarlison and Dominic Solanke haven’t been reliable – Solanke is “never, never fit,” and Richarlison isn’t scoring enough.
Toney joined Al Ahli from Brentford in 2024 and has scored 72 goals in 93 games, including 32 last season, making him the second top scorer in the Saudi league. He’s under contract until 2028 and reportedly earns around £400,000 a week.
Toney might already be popular with some Spurs fans, as he once called out Arsenal for “cringeworthy” behavior back in 2022, after Brentford beat the Gunners 2-0 in 2021. He tweeted, “Nice kick about the boys,” which Arsenal later used as motivation when they beat Brentford 3-0 the following year.
When asked about the back-and-forth in September 2022, Toney said, “Once was funny, second time a bit cringey, but I held back. I wanted to reply but fair play, they played well.”
Despite joking about Arsenal, Toney admitted in a 2023 podcast that he enjoys watching them. He said, “I’m a Liverpool fan, Liverpool my whole life, but I’ve always liked Arsenal too – how they play and how passionate their fans are. But yes, Liverpool all the way.”
