Tottenham have agreed to sell Cristian Romero to a big European club for £34m.
Spurs have reportedly agreed to sell Cristian Romero for £34 million to a Champions League club. Romero, 28, has been linked with a move all summer, first with Atletico Madrid in La Liga. The Argentina international and Spurs’ club captain made it clear earlier that he wanted to leave, with Barcelona also showing interest.
Now, reports say Spurs have agreed to sell Romero to Serie A champions Inter Milan. Inter recently signed former Manchester City centre-back John Stones. ESPN Argentina says Spurs and Inter have a verbal agreement, but Romero hasn’t yet agreed to personal terms.
Even with Romero likely leaving, Spurs have options in defense, having signed Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton and Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth, both expected to start under coach Roberto De Zerbi. Spurs have also brought in midfielders Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, plus experienced left-back Andrew Robertson, who joined after his Liverpool contract ended. Goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka has come in as a free agent from Burnley and will back up Guglielmo Vicario and Antonín Kinský.
De Zerbi recently said he would let Romero leave if that’s what he wanted. He praised Romero’s attitude and respect and mentioned that rumors about him leaving to prepare for the World Cup weren’t true. De Zerbi also shared that he had many chats with players earlier in the season, asking them to help the team stay up before thinking about moves.
Spurs are currently in Australia for pre-season and will play Chelsea on August 1. They have already played against MK Dons, Auckland, and Sydney FC. Coming up, they face Getafe behind closed doors on August 8, then have two friendlies against Hoffenheim on August 15 and 16, before starting the Premier League season away at Brentford on August 22.
