Jose Alvarado and Mark Williams might face a big punishment after getting into a fist fight during a recent NBA game.

Early Sunday morning, the New Orleans Pelicans played the Phoenix Suns at the Smoothie King Center. Phoenix won 123-114 in an exciting game, but the match took a turn when Suns’ center Williams and Pelicans’ point guard Alvarado started throwing punches at each other.

The trouble began in the third quarter after a foul was called on Alvarado, causing a short pause. While defending, Alvarado pushed Williams, and Williams pushed back. Then, after the referee called a foul, the two started arguing and soon grabbed each other before punching.

Both players landed solid hits, but teammates quickly pulled them apart, and the referees kicked them out of the game. Now, they could face even tougher consequences like fines or suspensions.

According to NBA rules, anyone involved in fights can be fined up to $50,000 and/or suspended by the Commissioner. It’s still not clear how long the suspensions for Alvarado and Williams might be.

After the game, Suns coach Jordan Ott said he didn’t actually see the fight but wasn’t surprised since the teams had played back-to-back games. “I didn’t see it all. Just saw it start, then everyone jumped in,” Ott said. “It just feels like a lack of sleep. When you play back-to-back nights, something like this tends to happen.”
