A surprising Premier League team is now the favorite to sign Mykhailo Mudryk from Chelsea.

Mykhailo Mudryk might leave Chelsea to join another Premier League team before the summer transfer window closes.

He was allowed to play again from the end of July after being suspended since December 2024 for failing a drug test. Mudryk tested positive for meldonium, a banned substance, and was originally banned for four years. However, he appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which was sorted out last month.

The FA explained that since Mudryk’s test, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) changed its rules. If the test had happened today, the amount of meldonium in his system wouldn’t have been reported, so he wouldn’t have broken any rules.

Mudryk made his return for Chelsea as a late substitute in their 1-0 friendly loss to Juventus on August 5 and has made two more brief appearances since. But he didn’t make the squad for Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Real Sociedad on Saturday.

According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea is happy to loan Mudryk out this summer but doesn’t want to sell him permanently, as they still believe he has a future at Stamford Bridge. Manager Xabi Alonso thinks Mudryk can make a difference this season but might not get regular game time right now as he gets back to full form.

Moving to another Premier League club seems the best option, though other clubs abroad might be considered if no English team shows interest. Newly promoted Coventry City is a strong option for a loan move, with Chelsea impressed by the style of play under Coventry’s boss, Frank Lampard.

Coventry won the Championship by a big margin last season and have made some great signings as they return to the Premier League for the first time since 2001. They signed goalkeeper Carl Rushworth permanently for a club-record £22.5 million, and shortly after, midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi joined for £23.1 million. Popular midfielder Gustavo Hamer also came back to the club after three years away.

TEAMtalk says Coventry is pushing hard to get Mudryk on loan. Chelsea thinks this would be a good chance for him to regain form and get regular games.

Lampard hasn’t spoken much this summer but shared some thoughts with BBC Sport about Coventry’s Premier League goals. He said he loves the squad that earned promotion and believes they deserve their place in the league. He admitted they need to strengthen the team and praised the owner for trusting him. Lampard knows it’s a big challenge to stay in the Premier League after being out for 25 years, but he’s focused on working hard on the pitch to make it happen.
