Valentin Barco only played 307 minutes of Premier League football for Brighton. So, what happened?
Valentin Barco will face his old team this Sunday when Chelsea plays Brighton at Stamford Bridge.
Many people see Barco as one of South America’s brightest young stars. Brighton signed him from Boca Juniors in January 2024, beating top clubs like Manchester City to get him.
Barco is naturally a left-back, but some say the tough physical style of the Premier League didn’t suit him there. Instead, his real strengths are carrying the ball, creating chances, and drifting into midfield. This skill set caught the eye of Brighton’s coach Liam Rosenior when they met. More on that later!
He showed promise at the end of the 2023-24 season under Roberto De Zerbi, playing 307 minutes in six Premier League games. Pep Guardiola even had a long chat with him after an impressive game against Manchester City, sparking rumors of a move. But things changed when Fabian Hurzeler arrived at Brighton.
Even though Barco had a good pre-season, Hurzeler chose midfielder Jack Hinshelwood to play left-back in their Premier League opener against Everton. Pervis Estupinan and Ferdi Kadioglu were also ahead of him in the team. Getting regular game time looked tough for Barco, so he was loaned to Sevilla for the 2024-25 season—but it didn’t go well.
He only played nine times for Sevilla before his loan was cut short in January. Sevilla’s manager Garcia Pimienta said, “He didn’t get the minutes he wanted. I guess he wants to leave.” Soon after, discussions about Barco’s future began. Hurzeler commented, “At the moment, this isn’t the right place for him.”
Strasbourg offered Barco a six-month loan, which proved to be a game-changer. He switched to his natural position in central midfield and did incredibly well. After 15 appearances, Strasbourg signed him permanently that summer for just £7.87 million.
Barco joined Chelsea this summer, having scored three goals and made 11 assists in 58 games for Strasbourg during the 2025-26 season. He recently said the position change “changed my life” in an interview with ESPN. He added, “It helped me play regularly, become important for my team, return to the Argentina national team, go to the World Cup, and now return to the Premier League. I feel comfortable in midfield because you get the ball a lot and control the game.”
Looking back, the problems at Brighton were a mix of things. His physical strength wasn’t quite there, and using him as a full-back instead of midfield probably wasn’t the best choice. Plus, he wanted to play regularly and may have lost patience, leading to a short stay at Brighton.
Now, Barco is shining in central midfield. In his Chelsea debut against Luton Town, he was one of the best players as the team won 2-0. The 22-year-old, who led Europe’s top five leagues in accurate through balls last season, helped set up both goals and showed his usual determination in the middle of the park.
If he keeps playing like this, Chelsea might have found a real star, especially as Enzo Fernandez seems ready to leave. Could Barco be the perfect replacement? Quite possibly!
