What’s going on with Harry Kane’s teammates from his very first England squad?
With just his third touch in international football, 21-year-old Harry Kane scored a goal only 79 seconds after coming on for captain Wayne Rooney, helping England beat a struggling Lithuania team at Wembley. It was a debut to remember and a sign of great things ahead.
“It’s a dream come true,” Kane said after the game. “I’m so excited to make my debut and to score so quickly – it’s a special night I’ll never forget. It’s what you dream of as a kid.”
The week before, Roy Hodgson had called Kane up to the England squad, impressed by his performance. Kane had scored 26 goals in 42 games for Tottenham and netted eight times in 10 appearances for England under-21s. This brought him into the squad for the European Championship qualifiers against Lithuania and Italy.
As they say, the rest is history. “It’s wonderful when fairytales come true, and it has for Harry,” said Hodgson after Kane’s quick goal.
Since then, Kane has become England’s all-time top scorer with 85 goals in 106 matches. But what about the rest of the 24-man squad?
Joe Hart (Manchester City)
After retiring at the end of the 2023/24 season, Hart has become a respected football pundit. His work for the BBC during this summer’s World Cup has been widely praised. He made 705 appearances in his club career and earned 75 England caps.
Fraser Forster (Southampton)
Recently, Forster extended his contract with Bournemouth for another year. Although he didn’t play first-team games in 2025-26, he offered valuable experience to the team, who played Europa League for the first time after finishing sixth.
Leighton Baines (Everton)
Baines is now an assistant manager at Everton, working with David Moyes and the coaching team. He retired in 2020 after a long spell at Everton, where he earned 30 England caps.
Gary Cahill (Chelsea)
Cahill has moved into punditry, often appearing on Premier League Productions, which broadcasts the Premier League worldwide. He retired in 2022 after playing for several clubs and earned 61 England caps.

Ross Barkley (Everton)
Barkley, 32, played 23 games for Aston Villa last season as they qualified for the Champions League. He has 33 England caps and is approaching 500 career appearances.
Michael Carrick (Manchester United)
Carrick recently became Manchester United’s head coach after a successful interim spell. He retired in 2018 with 34 England caps and made 463 appearances for United.
Fabian Delph (Aston Villa)
Delph retired in 2022 and works as a pundit and club ambassador. He earned 20 England caps and played for Leeds, Manchester City, and Everton.
Jordan Henderson (Liverpool)
Henderson made the World Cup squad but is doubtful due to a wrist injury. He now plays for Brentford.
Adam Lallana (Liverpool)
