Why Jordan Henderson Has to Wear His Full Kit During England vs Argentina Even With a Broken Arm
The reason Jordan Henderson wears a full England kit even though he’s injured and sitting on the bench has finally come to light.
Henderson made history by becoming the first England player to appear in seven major tournaments, playing a short six-minute spell in England’s 2-0 win over Panama at MetLife Stadium.
The Brentford midfielder joined the tournament expecting to be behind Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson in midfield, but didn’t expect to get injured the way he did.
After England’s 3-2 win over Mexico, while the team was celebrating by singing Wonderwall with fans, Henderson tried to jump over an advertising board but tripped and fell, hurting his wrist.
He was rushed to hospital, where it was confirmed he had broken his arm.
The former Liverpool captain later had surgery on his injury. “Surgery done! Let’s get ready for the big one Saturday,” he shared on Instagram. He also thanked the medical staff and surgeons who helped him.
Even though he couldn’t play anymore, Henderson was seen sitting on England’s bench during their 2-1 quarter-final win over Norway and their semi-final against Argentina.
Fans were surprised to see him wearing a full England kit, including shin pads and boots, despite his broken arm. Many joked about it on social media.
So why does he wear the full kit?
Because Henderson was still officially listed as a substitute for those games, he had to wear the kit to sit on the bench as an active player. Wearing a suit or tracksuit would have meant he couldn’t be there.
Being in full kit also lets him stand in the technical area, shout encouragement, give instructions, and warm up with the team. Suspended players can’t be in the technical area, so this also shows he’s still part of the squad.
The winner of the semi-final will play Spain at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey on Sunday, July 19.
According to FIFA’s World Cup rules, up to 26 players can be on the match list and sit on the bench, including at least two goalkeepers. Only people officially on the list can be in the technical area, and suspended players have to stay away.
So even though Henderson can’t play, he’s still part of the team spirit and ready to support his teammates in every way he can!
