Why UEFA has made Barcelona make a special change before their Champions League game against PSG

UEFA has made Barcelona do something unusual before their big Champions League game against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night (October 20).

Barca is in great shape right now, thanks to stars like Ballon d’Or favorite Lamine Yamal, Anthony Gordon, and Raphinha. Their amazing play has helped coach Hansi Flick’s team win 11 games in a row across all competitions.

At the moment, Barcelona is one of the strongest teams in Europe. They’ve started the Champions League impressively by beating Feyenoord and Galatasaray easily, sharing the top spot with PSG and Premier League’s Aston Villa.

Barcelona wants to keep their perfect record, but playing at the Parc des Princes is one of the toughest challenges. PSG is going for their third straight Champions League title, something not done since Real Madrid in 2018.

Facing Luis Enrique’s team, who just beat Manchester City 4-2, will be a big test for PSG after they lost to Atletico Madrid last season.

Interestingly, for the match at PSG, Barca can’t use any of their three usual kits this season. That means no traditional Blaugrana shirt, no black and purple kit for Kobe Bryant, and no blue alternative, according to SPORT.

This is because TV rules require clear color differences between the teams during the broadcast. So, UEFA has told Barcelona to wear the bright orange shirt they wore against PSG last season.

This shirt has already shown up in the club’s official ads for the match. It features players like Yamal, Pedri, and Gordon wearing last season’s shirt, which comes from Nike’s ‘Total 90’ collection, inspired by early 2000s football style.

This exciting game between two of the world’s best teams promises a thrilling fight. Barcelona will want to avoid losing like they did in the 2025/26 season when PSG came back to win 2-1 at Camp Nou, with Goncalo Ramos scoring the winner in extra time.

Flick’s famous high defensive line was caught off guard by Enrique’s star-filled attack, and the German coach continues to use this aggressive style. It often leaves space for opponents to attack on counters.

In fact, Barcelona has only kept one clean sheet in their last seven matches. Still, Flick plans to keep using the high line against the defending champions, even knowing the risks.

“Playing with a high defensive line is always a risk,” he said before the match. “But the key is how we press and react after losing the ball and how we keep the right distance. If we do that well, playing high gives us a big advantage.

“We’ve had only one clean sheet in seven games, but we’ve scored lots of goals.”

Barcelona clearly wants to outscore PSG on Tuesday, which could make this a very exciting game to watch.
