A medical student from Denmark who won the 2025-26 Fantasy Premier League in his very first season has shared his tips ahead of Friday’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

Erik Ibsen is the current FPL champion, winning by a huge 38-point lead. He only started playing because his sister needed help with her work league team. After that, he quickly took the lead in Gameweek 29 and never looked back.

So, what made him different from most managers? “I took some big risks that paid off, but I was also very patient,” Erik told SPORTbible before the first game between Arsenal and Coventry. “It sounds strange, but you need a mix of patience, risk, and a bit of luck,” added the 23-year-old.

Many people, including SPORTbible, have asked Erik for advice. We talked with him about his top three picks for Gameweek 1, the best £4.5m options, and more.

His biggest advice for new players? “Try to plan 3-4 weeks ahead. Keep things simple and don’t try to be too clever.”

Here’s what Erik had to say:

– Must-picks for GW1? “Bruno Fernandes, a second Manchester United player like Bryan Mbuemo or Harry Maguire, and an Arsenal defender such as Gabriel or Riccardo Calafiori. With those three, you should have a strong start.”

– About Bruno Fernandes: “He costs 12 million, which might be too much if United’s schedule gets tough with Champions League games. I could see his price dropping.”

– On Haaland: “He’s expensive compared to others, but I still think he’s worth it.”

– Chelsea players to watch: “I like Marco Palestra and Morgan Rogers. Bringing them in around GW4 looks like a smart move.”

Erik’s top tips:
1. Be patient – don’t rush, and remember every week doesn’t have to be perfect.
2. Don’t worry about bad weeks – I started 8 million in the world and still won. Just don’t give up!
3. Captain picks – don’t overthink it. Most of the time, going for the regular good choice is best.

More from Erik:
– “I think Tottenham’s defence will be one of the best this season.”
– “Bruno Fernandes might be one to avoid after the first three games.”

Other quick hits:
– Haaland or no Haaland? “No Haaland is more fun!”
– Best £4.5m player? Kristoffer Ajer from Brentford or Maxim De Cuyper from Brighton.
– Best captain for GW1? Bruno Fernandes.
– Player he’s least sure about? Bryan Mbuemo.
– Player he changed his mind on this pre-season? Gabriel.

Good luck with your team!
