Peter Schmeichel faced some criticism after he told Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle during a live TV interview that his old club, Manchester United, is “looking at signing your left-back.”
Jaissle, who took over from Eddie Howe at Newcastle after managing Saudi club Al Ahli, was just moments away from a big win in his first Premier League game. Unfortunately, in the ninth minute of stoppage time, Dominik Szoboszlai scored a penalty that was confirmed by VAR after a foul on Victor Munoz. This goal meant the match ended 2-2, despite earlier goals from Anthony Elanga and Joe Willock, which had put Manchester United ahead, and a goal from Cody Gakpo for Newcastle.
The penalty came after Lewis Hall, who had a strong game for Newcastle on Sunday, fouled Munoz. Jaissle is keen to keep hold of Hall, who’s been linked with a big move to Manchester United this summer.
After the game, Jaissle was asked about Newcastle’s transfer plans. He said, “It will be a stressful time for our sporting director, Ross Wilson. We definitely have some needs.” When Schmeichel encouraged him to share where the team might strengthen, Jaissle smiled and kept it a secret, saying, “If we bring players in, some might also leave.”
Then Schmeichel added, “We’re looking at your left-back,” clearly referring to Hall. Jaissle laughed and said, “No chance!”
Some fans didn’t like Schmeichel bringing up this topic, with one calling it “a little disrespectful.” Others thought it was a strange interview and felt Schmeichel was trying to push Jaissle too much. A few called Schmeichel’s comment “unprofessional.”
After the match, Jaissle spoke openly about the penalty decision. He felt it was a very soft call and said, “If you give that kind of penalty, we’ll see many more this season. Lewis can’t do anything else—he can’t just disappear on the field. That’s not good for football.”
