Former NFL player Alphonso Smith Jr. has passed away at 40 following a sad post on social media.
Former NFL player Alphonso Smith Jr. has sadly passed away at the age of 40.
Smith enjoyed a four-year career in the NFL after a standout college career, where he was named an All-American. He played as a cornerback for the Denver Broncos and Detroit Lions.
It’s been reported that Smith Jr. died by suicide on Wednesday in a Florida housing community. Just before his passing, he shared a heartfelt message on social media, showing he was struggling deeply.
Shortly after news of his death came out, it was revealed that Smith had asked for forgiveness from those he felt he had hurt during his life. On Facebook, he wrote, “Do not cry for me! I tried everything in my power to fight the demons behind the ones that someone put into ME! I did not want to be that WAY! I know I have disappointed so many folks. This is a DEMON in me! But not only me! It’s EVERYONE! I have HURT so many! I needed help & did not get it!”
He also apologized to his children, family, and friends and asked for forgiveness for any pain he caused. Smith spoke about past childhood trauma and said he needed help but didn’t receive it. He ended his post with, “I am SORRY! THIS IS IT!” This message has been shared widely on social media.
Smith played college football at Wake Forest, where he earned All-American honors and was inducted into their athletic hall of fame in 2021. He was picked 37th overall in the 2009 NFL Draft. He spent his rookie season with the Broncos, playing 15 games, then was traded to the Lions, where he played for three seasons. Smith played 42 games in total, making 88 tackles and eight interceptions. In 2010, his five interceptions were the most on the Lions team.
