Lewis Hamilton ignores Ferrari’s instructions in a messy crash at the Spanish Grand Prix as the race is stopped with a red flag.
Lewis Hamilton and the entire 2026 Formula 1 field are ready to make history this weekend at the Madring in Madrid, Spain. It’s the first time this track will host the Spanish Grand Prix, and if Hamilton grabs pole position in qualifying and wins on Sunday, he’ll secure a special place in F1 history.
Known for his fierce drive, Hamilton recently pushed the limits during practice, which caused a crash and brought out a red flag. This incident might affect his chance of making history this weekend.
Qualifying is set for Saturday afternoon, but before that, the Ferrari team will be busy fixing Hamilton’s car. During the final practice laps, with about 37 minutes left, Hamilton lost control at turn 22 when his front left wheel locked up, sending him straight into the barrier.
Although Hamilton managed to get the car moving again, he’d already passed the pit entry and had to complete another lap to return. His front wing took most of the damage, dragging under the car. Because of this, Ferrari asked him to stop to avoid any more damage, but Hamilton tried to keep driving back to the pits.
After almost two-thirds of the track, race engineer Carlo Santi told Hamilton that the race director had ordered him to stop for safety reasons. Hamilton then stopped, and the practice session was paused while the barriers were repaired.
Hamilton remains hopeful about his chances in the championship, currently 76 points behind leader Kimi Antonelli. He knows he needs a strong finish at the Spanish Grand Prix to close the gap before the season ends.
Last weekend at the Italian Grand Prix, Hamilton had a tough race after colliding with teammate Charles Leclerc early on, dropping him down the field. He fought back to finish sixth, but with Antonelli winning, it was a setback.
This latest crash could make his title fight even harder, so Hamilton will be hoping his car isn’t too damaged and that he can bounce back strong at the race.
