The true story behind Lisandro Martinez’s eye-opening Man United interview shared in a surprising new report

Lisandro Martinez lost his cool during a recent interview after Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid — and now we understand why.

On Tuesday night, United faced one of their toughest losses this season, falling 2-0 at home to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. This marked their fifth game in a row without a win.

But the result wasn’t the only bad news. Defender Martinez openly criticized the club’s leadership in a surprising interview right after the game. It turns out, he’s not the only player unhappy with how things are being handled.

Just minutes after the final whistle, Martinez gave an honest interview with Amazon Prime, sharing his real feelings. “Really poor. I have to control myself a lot. Sometimes it feels like a reflection of our club right now,” he said. “We had a great season last year, and I expect more from the top to bring in players because many teams are strengthening. I expect more from our technical director, and as players, we must also step up.”

Later, teammate Youri Tielemans and manager Michael Carrick said they had no comment on Martinez’s words. But according to talkSPORT, several players share his frustration with the club’s leadership.

The report says many United players are upset about the lack of ambition in recent transfer windows. Technical director Jason Wilcox is reportedly under fire, as some feel he missed a chance to build on last season’s momentum by signing only three midfielders last summer — which matches Martinez’s concerns.

The squad believes there are other areas that need strengthening, with lots of fans calling for defensive signings in January. Even key player Bruno Fernandes is growing frustrated with the club’s current state, which is worrying given his contract runs until summer 2027 and questions remain about his future.

Wilcox first joined United as technical director in April 2024 and was promoted to Director of Football in June 2025. In nearly three years at the club, around £624 million has been spent on transfers, bringing in 15 players. Some of the more well-known names are Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Senne Lammens, and Carlos Baleba — who made his first start since last summer in the Atletico game.

Fans have already shared their quick thoughts on Baleba following that match.
