Steven Gerrard is open to coming back to management with a struggling EFL club.

Steven Gerrard is being linked to a big job in the EFL, with talks that he might soon get back into management. It’s been almost two years since the Premier League star last managed a team when he left Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq by mutual agreement in January 2025.

Before Al-Ettifaq, Gerrard managed Rangers and Aston Villa. Now, it looks like he could be ready to return to a British club, as reports suggest he’s interested in taking over from Phil Parkinson at Wrexham.

For over five years, Parkinson has helped Wrexham grow from a small Welsh club in the National League to the Championship. The team gained attention partly because of the Hollywood takeover by actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds. However, Parkinson is under pressure after Wrexham’s slow start this season—they’re currently 17th in the table and face a crucial game against Preston on Saturday.

With only two wins from 10 games, if Wrexham doesn’t beat Preston, this might be Parkinson’s last match as manager. Gerrard is reportedly ready to step in if needed. According to TalkSPORT, sporting director Steve Nickson is considering Gerrard, who seems open to the idea of managing Wrexham.

Since leading Rangers to an unbeaten Scottish Premiership title in 2020/21, Gerrard has had a challenging time as a manager. He was let go after 11 months at Aston Villa and left Al-Ettifaq after 18 tough months. But now that he’s had a break from coaching, he might feel ready to return, and Wrexham could be a great opportunity.

Just weeks before these rumors came up, Gerrard talked about his time as a manager and his plans. On the Overlap Daily podcast, he said maybe he should have gained more experience before jumping into the Premier League with Aston Villa but didn’t regret it. He’s enjoying his time away but didn’t close the door on returning if the right chance comes.

“I look better though, don’t I? No stress, the grey hairs have slowed down. My work-life balance right now is really good. I’m happy where I am and don’t want to be anywhere else,” Gerrard said. “But if I was in a job now and came in to do this as a one-off, I wouldn’t shut any doors. I like to keep options open and live in the moment.”

He added, “I don’t know what the future holds in a year, two, three or four, but I’m excited about what I’m doing now.”

Talking more about coaching, he said, “It’s not easy being a coach. It’s a tough job, very different from playing. The pressures and stress run all day, every day. People need to know that if they want to become coaches.”

Stay tuned to see what happens next with Steven Gerrard and Wrexham!
