Sir Alex Ferguson reaching out to Roy Keane after hardly speaking for 20 years really shows what their relationship was like.
Sir Alex Ferguson might finally be ready to patch things up with Roy Keane after not speaking for almost 20 years. Both are known for being strong and outspoken, so it’s no surprise they’ve had their differences.
Keane was Ferguson’s captain for most of their time at Manchester United. But their friendship broke down after Keane was accused of turning against his teammates in a famous rant on MUTV following a heavy 4-1 loss to Middlesbrough in 2005. Since then, they barely talked. In fact, back in 2014 when Keane launched his autobiography, he said he might never forgive Ferguson.
But things might be softening now. In Ferguson’s book “Games of My Life,” he recalls some of the most important matches he managed, including United’s amazing comeback against Juventus in the 1999 Champions League. Keane played a key part in that game, and despite their past, Ferguson praised him warmly. He said Keane poured his heart into that match, calling it his greatest night in a United shirt, and said the performance would be remembered for generations.
Even though Ferguson seems open to mending their relationship, it’s clear that he’d need to apologize first. Then, Keane would have to accept that apology for them to move forward. Whether Keane is ready for that is still unclear. In 2019, he shut down any chance of forgiving Ferguson, saying, “I don’t forgive Alex Ferguson,” and that he wasn’t interested in speaking with him.
But things might be changing. Seven years later, Keane admitted he doesn’t hold grudges and even called Ferguson one of the most important people in his career. He said he’s still disappointed about how things ended but accepts it as part of life.
So maybe we’ll see them reconnect soon and finally get the full story behind their long-standing rift.
