UK boxing match stopped because of the most awful injury ever, needing medical help
Zak Miller’s featherweight title fight against Gully Powar on the Zuffa Boxing card was stopped after Miller suffered some very serious facial injuries — many people called them the worst they’d ever seen.
Miller was up against Powar for the vacant British featherweight title, fighting on the undercard of Joshua Buatsi vs. Willy Hutchinson in Manchester. The match was intense and close until a clash of heads caused Miller to get terrible injuries to his skull, forcing the referee to stop the fight.
The fight at Manchester’s AO Arena was a back-and-forth battle with both fighters doing well. But by the seventh round, Miller had a big bump over his left eye and a cut above his right eye. Then, a huge lump and two bad hematomas appeared on the right side of his head, making things worse.
A doctor checked Miller in the ninth round as the swelling grew, but he was still allowed to keep fighting for two more rounds, which surprised many people.
Eventually, when the swelling became too bad, the doctor took another look, and the referee stopped the fight so Miller could get treatment. The judges later gave the win to Powar with scores of 96-95, 97-94, and 96-94, making Powar the new British featherweight champion. While Powar was happy to win, many fans were shocked it took so long to stop the fight.
“Hope Zak Miller is ok. The doctor let that go on for another two rounds,” one fan wrote.
“Crazy that the corner and doctor didn’t stop it earlier,” said another.
“That swelling was awful. It was wrong to let the fight continue,” someone else added.
“I hope Zak Miller is alright after that nasty swelling,” another fan shared.
The injuries Miller suffered were very worrying, and DAZN commentators Ade Oladipo and Carl Frampton were stunned. “I’ve seen a lot of hematomas in boxing, but that was one of the worst,” said Oladipo, while Frampton added, “That’s the worst I’ve ever seen.”
Hematomas are common in boxing because of the many hits to the head. Frampton had many during his career but was still shocked by how severe Miller’s were.
As of now, there’s no update on how serious Miller’s injuries are or how long he might be out of action.
This loss to Powar was only the second defeat in Miller’s pro career, where he has 17 wins from 19 fights.
