FIA wants to stop Ferrari’s upgrade introduced at the Miami GP.

The FIA is now looking into banning one of Ferrari’s big upgrades that showed up at the Miami Grand Prix.

After a five-week break, Formula One is finally back, and the Miami Grand Prix weekend kicked off on Friday evening. Fans were excited to see how the 11 teams used the unexpected break to improve their cars, with many teams bringing important upgrades to Miami.

Ferrari stood out by bringing a big batch of 11 upgrades, including the eye-catching ‘Macarena’ rear wing that went viral during practice in China. But now, the FIA, F1’s governing body, is considering banning one of Ferrari’s new parts because the team found a clever loophole in the rulebook.

The part in question is Ferrari’s updated Halo winglet, also first seen at the Chinese Grand Prix in March. It’s legal for now, but a report from The Race says the FIA wants to ban it starting next season.

Ferrari realized a loophole in this year’s Halo rules. The 2026 regulations say the Halo can’t weigh more than 6kg and features a narrower central pillar. Ferrari saw that this pillar allowed them to add small winglets on each side. These winglets help tidy up airflow around the cockpit and guide it toward the engine intake and rear of the car, giving a small speed boost, especially at high speeds.

The FIA has allowed Ferrari to keep the design this year, after changes were made following talks after its debut in China. However, the FIA doesn’t want extra bodywork in this area because it might block a driver’s view during a race, so they plan to ban the winglets on safety grounds.

In Miami, only Lewis Hamilton tried Ferrari’s updated Halo winglet so far, while Charles Leclerc chose not to use it. Leclerc did test the winglet during a Monza testing session over the break, so he might try it later this weekend or during the season.

Ferrari originally planned to roll out their upgrades gradually after the third race in Japan, but the cancellation of the next two races changed that plan. Instead, they brought all the upgrades to Miami.

Along with the return of the ‘Macarena’ rear wing—which moves when the driver activates the car’s aerodynamics—Ferrari introduced a new front wing, a new floor, a rear diffuser, and tweaks to their exhaust flap. Team boss Fred Vasseur said after China that the ‘Macarena’ wing needed more testing before using it regularly, but they felt ready to bring it to Miami.

There were no updates to the power unit, but the new aero parts are aimed at boosting Ferrari’s performance.
