London 2040 – The UK government is thinking about bidding for the Olympic Games again as part of exciting plans.
The UK government is thinking about the idea of hosting both the Olympics and Paralympics in the 2040s. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has shared exciting plans to make the UK the top place for sports in the next 20 years.
They’re starting to look into whether the UK could host the Games again for the first time since London 2012. This includes checking the possible costs, benefits to communities, and how likely a strong bid would be.
There’s been more and more interest in a UK Olympics bid recently. Last year, London’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, said he wants the city to try for the 2040 Games. We already know Los Angeles will host in 2028 and Brisbane in 2032. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) hasn’t picked cities for 2036 or later yet, so 2040, 2044, or 2048 could all be good options for the UK.
This idea is part of a bigger plan from DCMS to make the UK a key host for big sports events. The UK has already launched a joint bid to host the 2035 Women’s World Cup and a bid for the Ryder Cup golf tournament in Bolton in 2035. The Ryder Cup hasn’t been in the UK since 2014, and there’s also interest in hosting the Solheim Cup.
England, Scotland, and Wales will team up with the Republic of Ireland to host Euro 2028. Plus, the Women’s T20 World Cup, European Athletics Championships, and Commonwealth Games are all set to take place in the UK later this year.
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said, “Sport brings our country together like nothing else, especially when we host the world’s biggest events. From London 2012 to last summer’s record-breaking Women’s Rugby World Cup, we’ve shown we’re great hosts time and time again. This Government is dedicated and ambitious. We want to keep attracting top sports events so people all over the UK can enjoy the many benefits they bring, and so we can show the best of Britain to the world.”
