Jessica Pegula, known as the ‘world’s richest tennis player,’ pulled off an amazing win at the Italian Open by getting a rare ‘double bagel’ to reach the fourth round.

The 32-year-old has a net worth of about $13 million, which is much less than some of the sport’s biggest stars like Roger Federer or Serena Williams. In fact, her family is extremely wealthy, worth over $7.5 billion (£5.5 billion), much more than any tennis player.

Pegula is hoping to add to her earnings with prize money from the Italian Open after her big win against Rebeka Masarova in the third round. The American only took an hour to beat the Swiss player, who is ranked world No. 160, achieving the rare feat of a double bagel.

In tennis, a double bagel happens when a player wins 6-0, 6-0, meaning the opponent didn’t win any games in either set.

After bageling Sonmez in her first match as the No. 5 seed, Pegula said, “I hadn’t played since Madrid. When you’ve had a long break and practiced a lot without matches, it can feel a bit tense going into a competitive game against someone who already has a win. It’s always tricky. But I felt I played solid. The first set was tough, but I played better in the second. I’m happy I handled the nerves well today.”

This is Pegula’s best run in the Italian Open singles since she reached the quarter-finals on her debut in 2021. Next, she will play Anastasia Potapova for a spot in the quarter-finals.
