LeBron James’ surprising new team revealed as he gets ready for free agency
An NBA insider has shared which teams might want LeBron James next, including two surprising dark horse options eager to sign the 41-year-old superstar. LeBron’s 23rd season ended Tuesday when his Los Angeles Lakers were swept 4-0 by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals.
Without key teammates like injured MVP candidate Luka Doncic and an initially absent Austin Reaves, LeBron carried the Lakers past the Houston Rockets in the first round. He averaged 23.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 7.3 assists per game during the 2026 playoffs, including a strong 24-12-3 stat line in a close 110-115 loss on Tuesday.
While LeBron has one championship with the Lakers — earned during the COVID-19 bubble playoffs in 2021 — he still trails Michael Jordan by two rings and may be focused on playoff chances as he decides where to play next.
NBA insider Marc Stein says four teams are interested in LeBron. The most talked-about are the Golden State Warriors and LeBron’s hometown Cleveland Cavaliers, but two other surprise teams — the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers — are also in the mix.
Stein points out that both the Warriors and Cavaliers face financial limits that could make signing LeBron tricky. He wrote, “The Warriors have long been interested but have limited room to make an offer. The Cavs have even less financial flexibility, but you can’t fully rule them out, especially for a storybook ending.”
LeBron began his career with the Cavaliers before winning two titles with the Miami Heat. He returned to Cleveland and led them to their first-ever championship in 2016 by beating the Warriors — a team that went 73-9 in the regular season.
The Knicks and Clippers are considered dark horse options. Stein notes LeBron’s known love for Madison Square Garden and that the Knicks are now favorites to win the Eastern Conference and reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999. A move there would put LeBron on a team with a real chance at a final ring.
The Clippers also have a connection, as they employ LeBron’s former Cavaliers coach, Tyronn Lue, and play in Los Angeles, making them an interesting choice.
Back in 2020, commentator Bill Simmons revealed that the Knicks were once LeBron’s first choice when he left the Cavaliers, but things didn’t work out and he ended up with the Heat instead. If the rumors are true, joining New York now could bring LeBron full circle late in his career.
Despite all the interest, Stein thinks there’s a good chance LeBron stays in LA, with retirement not yet on the table.
For now, fans will have to wait around six weeks for clearer news on LeBron’s next step as he prepares to write the final chapter of his legendary career.
