Man City are looking into signing a second Chelsea player who hasn’t played in 125 days, with Enzo Maresca giving the thumbs up to the move.
Manchester City’s new head coach, Enzo Maresca, seems keen to bring in a Chelsea player he knows well from his time at Stamford Bridge. Maresca’s first game in charge went well, with City edging Bournemouth 2-1 on August 23 thanks to late goals from Marc Guehi and Josko Gvardiol.
City didn’t play their best, and Maresca picked six defenders after midfielder Rodri left. Some players linked with Spurs, like Omar Marmoush and Savinho, didn’t get on the pitch, though Marmoush was on the bench.
Elliot Anderson, City’s record signing, started in midfield alongside Nico O’Reilly. City is also close to signing Morocco’s Ayyoub Bouaddi after agreeing an £86 million deal with Lille. Meanwhile, midfielder Tijjani Reijnders moved to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Qadsiah for £52 million, and Maresca wants to replace him by signing Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez before the transfer window closes on September 1.
Maresca is also looking to strengthen City’s attack. Reports say he wants to reunite with Spanish forward Marc Guiu, who he worked with at Chelsea. Journalist Graeme Bailey mentions that Guiu is one of several Chelsea players City are watching, along with Enzo Fernandez and Malo Gusto. They see Guiu as a promising young player who could back up star striker Erling Haaland and add depth to the team.
However, Guiu has other options too. Napoli and RB Leipzig have shown interest in the 20-year-old. Guiu came through Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy and joined Chelsea during Maresca’s coaching spell. But he has struggled to become a regular, with just 29 appearances over two seasons, including seven in the Conference League.
He hasn’t scored a Premier League goal yet and is quite far down the pecking order under Chelsea’s current boss, Xabi Alonso. At the start of the 2025/26 season, Guiu was loaned to Sunderland but was quickly recalled after just three games because Chelsea had injury problems up front. The forward is contracted to Chelsea until 2029.
