Arne Slot is already in talks with a big European club just minutes after being let go by Liverpool.
Arne Slot is already becoming the top choice to lead a big European club after his time at Liverpool came to an end.
Slot was let go as Liverpool’s head coach after two seasons on Saturday, May 30. The club shared a detailed statement about the decision.
Liverpool’s owners thanked Arne for all his hard work, especially how he supported the team after the sad loss of Diogo Jota last summer.
During his time with Liverpool, Slot led the team to 66 wins, 18 draws, and 29 losses over 113 games. His biggest achievement was winning the Premier League title in the 2024/25 season, Liverpool’s second league win in 35 years.
However, last season’s excitement faded as many fans felt the team played too cautiously and sometimes found the style boring. They often asked for a return to the exciting “heavy metal football” that Jürgen Klopp’s teams were known for, a view shared by Mohamed Salah.
Andoni Iraola, who is leaving his job at Bournemouth, is expected to take over at Liverpool. He led Bournemouth to a 6th place finish in 2026, earning the club their first-ever spot in the Europa League. Other top candidates for the job include Lens boss Pierre Sage, Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner, and Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeneß, but Iraola is the clear favorite.
Journalist Sacha Tavolieri reports that Slot might not be out of work for long. He is now the leading candidate to become AC Milan’s new head coach after Massimiliano Allegri was dismissed. Talks between Milan and Slot are said to be ongoing.
Milan finished 5th in Serie A and missed out on the Champions League for the second year straight, losing seven of their last 13 games.
Liverpool released a warm statement about Slot:
“This was a tough decision for us as a club. Arne’s time at Liverpool has been full of important and successful moments. We truly appreciate everything he has done, especially as it shows his dedication and skill as a leader.
From the start, it was clear Arne didn’t just take on responsibility – he embraced it. He helped us win the Premier League title and handled many challenges throughout the season, including the difficult time after losing Diogo. His kindness during that period showed his great character.
While we have great respect for Arne and all he has achieved, we believe it’s time for a change to help the team move forward. This decision wasn’t made lightly.
Arne will always hold a special place in Liverpool’s history as the coach who brought us our 20th league title, one of the most impressive accomplishments, especially in his first season.
We wish Arne all the best in the next chapter of his coaching career, confident he will keep finding success. His legacy at Liverpool is secure and will only grow stronger over time.
He leaves with our thanks, a Premier League title, and the knowledge he and his family will always be welcome back at Anfield.”
