Gary Neville realized his time at Manchester United was coming to an end after watching two of his teammates train, admitting he felt he wasn’t close to their level anymore.

There’s no doubt about Neville’s amazing career at Old Trafford. Starting with the Class of ’92, he spent 20 successful years with the club he loved as a boy. During that time, he won eight Premier League titles, three FA Cups, and two Champions League trophies. He was even named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year five times.

The former right-back decided to retire in February 2011, a few months after a tough game against West Brom, which played a big role in his choice to step away.

Now at 51, Neville has shared how watching teammates Rafael and Fabio in training made him realize his career at United was nearly over. Talking to Sky Sports, he said, “I remember Rafael, who played in my position, and Fabio who mostly played left-back. Rafael especially was taking over my spot.”

He continued, “I watched them in training, how quick they were to the ball and tough in tackles. They had the skill to take the ball from wide players and wingers. Rafael was so aggressive and fierce, and I thought, ‘I’m nowhere near this.'”

That’s how Neville used to play — with aggression, speed, and sharp moves. Seeing those qualities in Rafael and Fabio made him realize his time was done.

Neville also talked about his tough games near the end, especially the one against West Brom. “In my last six to eight months at the club, I felt embarrassed,” he said in 2020. “That West Brom game was a horror show for me for 62 minutes. I don’t know how I didn’t get sent off or cause more goals.”

He added, “It was similar in games at Stoke and Everton where mistakes cost us. For me, I knew I was finished.”
