Players have been told about a special gesture they should use to alert referees if they see any racist incidents during the World Cup. The big event in North America starts on Thursday, June 11, with co-host Mexico playing South Africa, just like in the 2010 opener.

This new 48-team tournament will feature 104 games across Mexico, Canada, and the United States. With the kickoff just over a week away, the rules to fight racism at the competition have been announced.

On Wednesday, journalist Henry Winter shared that players have been asked to cross their arms to form an ‘X’ if they witness racism on or off the field. This signals the referee, who will then follow a three-step plan. The referee can stop the game, pause it for up to 15 minutes, or even cancel the match if the abuse keeps happening.

This idea is a big part of FIFA’s ‘No Racism’ campaign and was agreed upon by all 211 member associations at the 2024 FIFA Congress in Bangkok. The gesture was first used at the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino said, “Using the ‘No Racism’ gesture at the Under-20 Women’s World Cup was an important first step to support players everywhere. Now part of the three-step process, we look forward to seeing it used worldwide. This was supported by all FIFA members, and I thank everyone for working together to end racism in football and beyond. Thanks to all the players who helped make this happen.”

The gesture has already appeared in two Real Madrid matches after players Antonio Rudiger and Vinicius Jr reported possible racist abuse. Referees used the signal in those games, but it hasn’t been used by players or yet at the World Cup.

Before the tournament, World Cup players showed the gesture during photo sessions, including Scotland and Aston Villa’s John McGinn.
