The sound inside Houston Stadium when Curacao scored their very first World Cup goal was truly amazing!
Curacao, the smallest country ever to make it to the World Cup, had everyone buzzing when they scored a historic goal in their first game against Germany. The energy inside Houston Stadium was amazing!
To give you an idea of how small Curacao is, it’s a tiny island in the Caribbean with just 158,000 people—smaller than the Isle of Man and about the size of Huddersfield.
Ten years ago, Curacao was ranked 150th in FIFA’s world rankings. Now, they’ve moved up to 82nd, which is a huge achievement.
Their journey has been incredible, led by their coach Dick Advocaat, who at 78 is the oldest coach in World Cup history. He was emotional before the game on Sunday but couldn’t stop smiling when Livano Comenencia scored in the 21st minute to tie the game, after his shot bounced past Germany’s goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer.
Thousands of Curacao fans went wild as Comenencia celebrated with his teammates, and the noise inside the stadium was absolutely deafening. You can watch that exciting moment below.
