Why are so many players wearing pink boots at the World Cup? A key person shares the reason behind it.

You probably noticed that most football boots at the 2026 World Cup are pink—it’s hard to miss! Right from the start of Mexico’s win over South Africa last week, viewers saw that many players were sporting the same bright boots. This trend has kept going throughout the tournament, with almost every game showing off this eye-catching color.

Because the World Cup is watched by millions worldwide, boot brands want to show off their newest designs. Players usually have big deals with these brands, so they get to wear the latest boots on the biggest stage. This year, Nike, Adidas, and Puma all chose pink as their main color. Nike’s research found that athletes feel more confident wearing bright, bold boots.

Odinga Nimako, a senior member of Nike’s football footwear team, told The Athletic, “Athletes and fans keep saying that bright colors boost confidence, especially during big moments. That’s why we focused on colors that really stand out, and pink is one of those. People say if you can pull off pink boots, you’ve got to be really good. Plus, pink isn’t too niche anymore—it appeals to lots of people.”

Another big reason for the pink boots is how clearly they stand out. The color contrasts well with the green grass on the pitch, and since none of the 48 teams wear pink jerseys, the boots really pop. Nimako said Nike tried other colors, but none looked as good as bright pink. “Pink makes the boots very visible whether you’re watching from the stands or on TV. We wanted that strong visual for the World Cup. It was important for the boots to stand out against the kits this time around.”

There are a few exceptions, though. Lionel Messi wore white and blue Adidas El Ultimo Tango boots when he scored his first World Cup hat-trick, and Nike made special all-gold boots for Cristiano Ronaldo in Portugal’s opening game. But for most players, pink is definitely the color of the tournament!
