Spurs face ‘radio silence’ trying to sign top Roberto De Zerbi target before deadline
Tottenham Hotspur have been busy this summer as their coach, Roberto De Zerbi, works to build a team that can reach the Champions League and maybe even challenge for the Premier League title this season.
The North London club has spent a lot, signing Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes, and Sandro Tonali for over £200 million. They’re also expected to bring in Man City’s Savinho and Omar Marmoush for around £140 million combined.
Spurs and De Zerbi still want to add one more attacker, but with the transfer deadline coming up fast, their final target might not make it to White Hart Lane.
According to Voetbal International journalist Joost Blaauwhof, Spurs are having trouble signing Cody Gakpo. He shared on X (formerly Twitter) that there’s been “radio silence” between Liverpool and Spurs.
Tottenham reportedly offered Liverpool €69 million for the Dutch star, but Liverpool might be waiting for a better bid, especially after seeing the big money spent on Man City players. Blaauwhof said, “For now, radio silence between Liverpool and Spurs regarding Cody Gakpo. As long as Bradley Barcola isn’t at Anfield, the chance of a deal seems almost zero. Everyone knows where they stand. If Barcola arrives, it will be up to Gakpo.”
It’s also possible Liverpool want to sign some of their own targets before letting Gakpo leave, so they don’t run short on players for the left wing. Right now, Liverpool are looking at getting Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris Saint-Germain, and they’ve also been linked to Yankuba Minteh from Brighton.
Gakpo’s move to Spurs seems to depend on whether Liverpool can add to their attacking players. If they don’t, they would only have two players who can play left wing, but neither has much top-level experience.
For Andoni Iraola’s team, Rio Ngumoha and Victor Munoz are the only options there, and they are still learning despite Iraola having won the 2026 World Cup, though he didn’t play in that tournament.
So, unless Liverpool sign more players for that position, it looks like Gakpo might not be wearing Spurs white this season after all.
