The World Cup is a great chance for many footballers to impress and earn big moves this summer. One MLS star could boost the interest Barcelona already has in him by putting on a great performance at the tournament.

Barcelona, fresh off winning La Liga this season, want to strengthen their team for next year. They hope to win the league again, making it three titles in a row under coach Hansi Flick. One area they really want to improve is their defense, which is why they’re interested in this MLS player.

That player is Lucas Herrington, who has been one of the breakout stars in MLS this year with the Colorado Rapids. The 18-year-old has played so well he earned a spot on Australia’s national team for the World Cup. He’ll be helping Australia in a group with the USA, Turkiye, and Paraguay.

Football reporter Tom Bogert said several clubs are watching Herrington closely, with Barcelona being the biggest name linked to him. It might surprise some that a club like Barcelona is interested in a player with just 15 appearances this season, especially since the Rapids are 11th in the Western Conference.

But for an 18-year-old to make the Australia squad and catch the eye of big clubs shows his huge potential to be one of the best defenders out there. Herrington is already seen as one of the top young talents in MLS.

He’ll focus on doing well at the World Cup before thinking about his next steps, whether it’s staying with Colorado, joining Barcelona, or somewhere else. Herrington will also be hoping to help Australia go further than ever before—aiming to make it past the group stage and maybe even to the quarter-finals for the first time in their history, building on their best runs in 2006 and 2022.
