One of England’s key players for the first two World Cup games has missed training because of a hamstring injury, raising questions about coach Thomas Tuchel’s choices for backup players.

England has already faced some injury problems at the 2026 World Cup, with Tino Livramento’s tournament ending before it even began. Fitness concerns for Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka have also shown how tough the season has been, especially with Arsenal competing in many big matches.

Now, another important starter has had to miss training, adding to worries about England’s defensive options. After the goalless draw against Ghana, right-back Reece James, who often struggles with injuries, is the latest player needing medical care.

James had a strong season at Chelsea thanks to careful management by his former coach Liam Roseinior. He played 44 games this season, much more than the 11 he had last year, but a recurring hamstring problem kept him out of several matches recently. Since March 14, he only played 64 minutes across the last eight Premier League games.

That same hamstring issue seems to be bothering James again, as he missed England training on July 25 along with Declan Rice. Both players might miss the upcoming match against Panama, which puts extra pressure on Tuchel after the disappointing draw with Ghana.

Rice, who had calf strapping after the last game and has a back injury, was expected to be rested, especially with new Manchester City player Elliot Anderson ready to step into midfield. But James’ injury is more worrying for England. Tuchel has relied heavily on him as the only regular right-back, using Djed Spence on both sides and centre-back Ezra Konsa as backup.

Tuchel left players like Lewis Hall and Trent Alexander-Arnold at home, even though there weren’t many full-backs available, which surprised many fans. He also replaced Livramento with centre-back Trevoh Chalobah, raising more questions.

TalkSPORT reporter Henry Winter shared his thoughts: “It’s frustrating when Reece James gets niggles, especially starting games back-to-back. Full-back is tough on hamstrings, and it’s a shame his body can’t keep up with his talent.” He added, “Tuchel knew the risks before the tournament. Full-back is a big problem since he packed the squad with centre-backs some of whom can play right-back. Hopefully, Nico O’Reilly will return for Djed Spence against Panama.”

If James can’t play, England only has Spence and O’Reilly as natural full-back choices, which could mean lots of playing time for those two. Tuchel even had a tense moment with Spence during the Ghana game, caught on camera correcting him for not following tactics.

It’s unclear how serious James’ injury is, but it likely won’t keep him out of the whole tournament—just the next game against Panama on Saturday, June 27.
