England fans are already feeling the World Cup is ‘over’ after seeing some strange moments in the Costa Rica friendly.
England fans were amazed to spot a strange detail inside Inter&Co Stadium during the Three Lions’ 3-0 win over Costa Rica.
On Wednesday (June 10), Thomas Tuchel’s team made an easy job of beating Costa Rica. Anthony Gordon stood out with a goal and an assist, while Declan Rice and Ollie Watkins also scored.
This was England’s last public match before the 2026 World Cup officially starts. The tournament kicks off in Mexico City on Thursday (June 11) with Mexico playing South Africa. Before the World Cup, Tuchel’s squad will also play a private game against Miami FC.
England’s first World Cup game is on June 17 in Dallas, Texas, against Croatia. Later, they will face Ghana and Panama in Group L.
Even though England played well, the match had some drama. The start was delayed by an hour because of storms. But fans also noticed something else that many felt showed what’s wrong with modern football.
In the 15th minute, ITV Sport showed Declan Rice taking a corner kick. Fans quickly spotted some people sitting at tables right by the corner flag, eating during the game.
One fan said, “Why are people eating at tables by the corner flag? Seriously?” Another joked, “Hope a player accidentally kicks the ball into those fans eating right at the pitch!” A third added, “Americans really do bring dinner tables to football games.”
Other fans weren’t happy, saying the atmosphere felt bad because of this setup. One wrote, “Fans sitting down eating at tables near the corner flag — no wonder the vibe is rubbish.” Another said, “Wait, dinner tables in the front row? The USA World Cup is a joke.” Someone else joked, “Are they playing at a pub? There are tables right behind the corner flag!”
After the game, Tuchel praised his team’s “intensity, commitment,” and “team spirit.” He said, “I asked for this before the match — to raise our level in intensity, commitment, and working together — and we did it. The Arsenal players coming in definitely helped, and training is paying off.”
Tuchel continued, “We’re getting used to the heat, things are clicking, and the players really pushed themselves today. The result will take care of itself when we play at this level. The team was ready to take the next step, and the energy in the stadium was amazing. If we can keep playing like this and build this bond with the fans, it will be something special.”
