England vs Panama preview and prediction: Can the Three Lions bounce back in the World Cup group decider?

With England eager to bounce back from their tricky second game in the 2026 World Cup, they face a familiar challenge in Panama. Before the big Group L showdown on Saturday, SPORTbible is here to guide you through what’s at stake.

England’s journey hit a bump against Ghana after a strong start with four goals against Croatia. Ghana’s solid defense almost gave them a winning goal, leaving England feeling a bit shaken.

Before the tournament, we chatted with nearly 1,500 fans across the UK for Operation Ladisfaction with Ladbrokes. Interestingly, 20% of England fans said they might skip the group games and only tune in during the knockout stage.

But now, the Panama match feels like a knockout itself. Any slip-ups could lead to a tough Round of 32 clash and an early exit.

With surprises already shaking up the tournament, like Cabo Verde beating Spain, Panama is a real threat that could throw England off their game.

Coach Tuchel has plenty of tricks up his sleeve and will need his top players firing to bring that winning feeling back to England fans.

Panama’s strength is their solid defense, having only let in two goals so far. That defense will be key if they want to hold off England.

We saw Ghana create chances on the counter, and Panama will hope to do the same. Their striker, Cecilio Waterman, a seasoned 35-year-old, might not be lightning fast but knows how to create chances and score.

Like against Ghana, Waterman will likely mark England’s midfield maestro Elliot Anderson closely, trying to stop him from controlling the game.

If Panama wants a result, Waterman will need to disrupt the midfield and launch quick attacks for his teammates.

With the Ghana result still in mind and the possibility of Ghana topping the group with a win over Croatia, England must win against Panama. Expect a strong lineup led by captain Harry Kane, who will be keen to score and chase the Golden Boot.

There might be some changes though, giving players like Marcus Rashford a chance to shine. Rashford and Saka could come in on the wings, helping to stretch Panama’s defense while Kane drops back a bit.

Rashford, in particular, will be eager to reclaim his spot, using his speed and power to challenge Panama’s right-back in one-on-one battles.

Look out for Rashford’s skill to not only impress coach Tuchel but also remind everyone of his talent, especially as he eyes a new club.

While the wings are crucial, England’s attack has shown a weakness in their attacking midfielders. Anderson has lifted some defensive burden off Declan Rice, allowing Rice to push forward more, but so far, Rice hasn’t made much impact in attack.

Rice might rest after a minor injury scare against Ghana. Whether he plays or a backup like Mainoo or Rogers steps in, England will need their midfielders to support the attack and link up well with the wide players.

For Panama, their tight, low defensive block must stay organized, passing effectively from midfield to defense and keeping an eye on Kane when he moves around.

England has struggled against this kind of defense, especially Panama’s strong back five, so Panama could frustrate England just like they did to Ghana and Croatia—unless England avoids those small lapses.

In our LADnation Survey with Ladbrokes, a big 87% of fans believe England will reach at least the quarter-finals, starting with a group win to set up an easier Round of 32 match.

And while 13% are dreaming of football coming home, the draw against Ghana still lingers in everyone’s minds. England needs to learn how to break down a low block, and Panama might be the perfect test. Tuchel and his team have likely been preparing hard.

We might see some squad changes, but England’s skills should shine through. A comfortable 3-0 win sounds likely, with each of the Three Lions scoring once.

England are clear favorites at Ladbrokes, priced 1/6 to win, while a draw is a long shot at 7/1. Betting on England to win by two or more goals improves the odds to 6/5.

Don’t miss the Group L decider: England vs. Panama on Saturday, June 27, at 10pm BST (4pm local time).
